Sila, Cuvu District, Nadroga Province

On November 3, 2023, the community of Sila Village, Cuvu District, Nadroga Province in Fiji received recognition as Tsunami Ready under the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  Sila Village fulfilled the Programme’s indicators, and has prepared its coastal residents to take effective action to save their lives from the next tsunami.  Outputs included the creation of inundation and evacuation maps and response plans for the community, as well as the installation of signage for evacuation routes, assembly areas and tsunami hazard zones. The Mineral Resources Department, the National Disaster Management Office and the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, in collaboration with the Village also conducted extensive public awareness and education, and drills to strengthen their preparedness.  The implementation of Tsunami Ready was supported by the Project ‘Building Tsunami Resiliency in Pacific Island Countries’ led by the ITIC with funding support from the USAID.  The ITIC, IOC of UNESCO Suva, US NOAA and the SPC, and Plan International and the Partners for Community Development Fiji (PCDF) teamed to support the Village’s implementation.
