Post-tsunami Eruptions and Cone Regrowth

IMG5 Anak Krakatau 23DecContinuing hydrovolcanic eruptions of Anak Krakatau on 23 December.

After the massive eruptions and collapse on 22 December, large hydrovolcanic (Surtseyan) eruptions continued on Anak Krakatau, further transforming the terrain, rapidly closing off the crater from the ocean and eventually rebuilding a volcanic cone. Rapid regrowth of an unstable edifice, such as occurred during the 90 years prior to 2018, is highly probable and essential to monitor.
