Under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System first convened in 1968 (ICG/PTWS, formerly known as ICG/ITSU for International Tsunami). At that time, the IOC established the International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC), which is currently staffed by the U.S.A and Chile. The ITIC supports the work plan of the ICG/PTWS, and works directly with Member States to strengthen their national tsunami warning and mitigation systems.

The ITIC works closely with the IOC Tsunami Service Providers (TSP, NOAA’s Richard H. Hagemeyer Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), Japan's Northwest Pacific Tsunami Advisory Center (NWPTAC), China's South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Centre, Nicaragua's Central America Tsunami Advisory Centre (CATAC, interim service since 2022) to ensure that Member States understand how to use the tsunami threat advice to guide their national tsunami warning decision-making.  The ITIC also works with the US National Tsunami Warning Center (US NTWC), which provides warning services for Canada through bi-lateral arrangements.
